The translation, as usual, is mine. Though I feel this is my weakest attempt so far - I managed to get an almost literal translation, but it is not able to convey the sensitivities expressed in the original hindi version. I am not able to put into words the feeling of loss, of hope, of helplessness, of determination, that the poet did.
That brings to me a thought - can one individual really understand the feelings and emotion of another? When one says to another, "I understand what you are feeling (or, going through right now)", is he or she actually capable of it? On my part, if I have had a setback, and someone tells me that s/he understands, perhaps my reaction would be that of resentment. I might be more at peace if s/he tells me that s/he is sorry to learn of the loss.

Well, on your point about understanding the emotions of another person, I only partially agree with you.
True that no one can match the exact feelings of an individual what s/he is going thru but many a times we do understand if we happen to experience same scenarios or we are of same gender/age... or have some common traits.
As a matter of fact, I seldom use 'sorry' word in such situations. It gives a feeling of being formal...
I would rather use what you said.. "I understand" and appreciate if someone uses it with me more than the 'sorry' word.
Well, in short, every one has his/her own thinking.
And on a lighter note, I know now what not to use with you. :P

I didn't mean to say that in exactly the smae words "I am sorry" ... I meant that saysomething to that effect. And also that say that you understand what someone is going through, only if you really mean it, only if you have had a similar experience .... not just empty words ...

loved the 3rd one - how true , people can take all , however your own confidence only you can let it go.
I feel no one can understand truly the extent of emotions ( as we are always on the outside) still a listener who is "really " listening and says " I understand " or " sorry" - I think it does give relief. However in most of the cases , you would not mind hearing certain words from a person who is closer then mere acquaintance.
ps - ahem...last lines were more in tune of "kabhi hum kuch bol dein aapko apna samajh kar - so you don't chop me to pcs :-)

Well so far understanding of exact feeling is concerned; I will say NO, no one can feel the exact emotion. I will not say in details, but believe me even the dearest one also simulate the situation with something he has seen in past or what if happened that to himself. We all are more of less selfish. We love others not for their feelings, because of we like to love him/her.

I agree, how you would like to be comforted by a person definitely depends on the closeness of your relationship.
I am not even going to prick you, let alone chopping to pieces :-D For one, everyone is entitled to his/her own opinion. And secondly, this is just what I think I might feel, not what I usually do. Baki to "Its only words, and words are all I have ..." :-)
